Our small mortars are used for pounding small medicine or mixing small amount of cooking ingredients. For a large one, we normally use it for pounding ingredients into our popular curry paste for our tasty Thai shrimp soup or “Tom Yam Koong” for example or other kinds of soup. Other popular usage is also for pounding raw papaya with other ingredients such as dried shrimp, tomatoes, bean, and chili, etc. into our exotic Thai salad “Papaya Pok Pok”.
Our mortars are made of sugar palm wood; it can also be made of granite for more durability. Most of traditional Thai kitchens can do without these mortars. |
